Description: “Instinct” is from the Partnership series explores the relationship between humans and nature through the domestication of wolves into dogs. In 2010 Grace adopted a 3 year old Catahoula Leopard Hound mix named Sage from the Humane Society while visiting her family home for the summer in Boulder Colorado. Grace and Sage bonded immediately and went everywhere from the backcountry to the big city until Sage died in March 2018. Grace brought Sage with her everywhere because Sage demanded it! Grace was constantly training Sage how to adapt to the studio, the different homes they rented, road trips, job sites, buses, trains, you name it! Inspired by Sage’s loyalty and excellent companionship, Grace used Sage as the primary subject of the Partnership Series. The Partnership Series became Grace’s graduating portfolio for her Fine Arts Degree and Sage continued to be a subject of Grace’s post graduate artwork series such as the Sunshine Collection.
The Partnership Series also connects Grace’s love for Anthropology and how humanity has developed into current times. As Grace was in college she took many anthropology classes which enhanced her relationship with Sage and the other dogs who lived with Grace and Sage. There is no question that domestication of animals played a big part of humanity’s success and survival and the domestication of wolves was the first to be domestication by humans. Grace views this alliance between dogs and humans with great respect and gratitude for the services provided by dogs. Each Partnership Series artwork celebrates the dog qualities of companionship, loyalty, and willingness to sacrifice their wellbeing for the security and betterment of their family. In this, Grace will always find the inspiration to include dogs in her artwork!
