We Are All in This Together,” a public art sculpture that will decorate the Grand Lake Marquee sign in the the City of Grand Lake. Both the marquee and sculpture are in the planning phase of construction and are expected to be built simultaneously beginning on Earth Day 2022 (Apr 22, 2022). The roots of the “We’re All In This Together” sculpture are three stone monuments, spanning Grand Lake’s iconic boardwalk, connecting earth to sky. Artist Grace Noel’s sculpture re-tells the Ute Creation Story - the creation of the earth and all living things, and how the Ute people were brought to the Sacred Ground. Grand Lake represents this sacred place and is the source of the mighty Colorado River. Grace’s totemic archway will be made of colorful painted animals fabricated from Cor-Ten steel. It will be built on repurposed ski-lift cable, the sculpture will incorporate kinetic moon phases that respond to the wind, rain and sun. The Ute Origin Story is woven through the Moon phases, emphasizing a deep connection with the natural world. The sculpture creates an archway, framing mountains & sky through the lens of Ute tradition, and connections to Mother Earth. “We're All in This Together” tells a continuing story of people engaging with the land. The hope is to enrich the connection of the past, through many cultures, to the future of Grand Lake’s community. The sculpture affirms that ‘We’re all in this Together.’
Grace's team will work with other local creative organizations, supplementing the unveiling of the marquee sculpture with community-wide events promoting the message of environmental justice and stewardship. Some of these are:
Grand Lake Creative District and the City of Grand Lake
National Endowment for the Arts and Colorado Creative Industries awarded Grace the Colorado Creates: Creative Corps ARP grant in 2021 for the sculpture’s construction.
Grand Lake is a small community of less than 1500 people. The town recently experienced the troubling effects of the East Troublesome Fire, including dwindling water supply. This was exacerbated by climate change with fears of continuing threats. The town is experiencing a significant loss of full time residents, being replaced by second home owners. This threatens the resilience The town is creating a catalyst through partnerships with creatives to discuss and address these climate change issues collaboratively.
